Nkomazi Wilderness Booklet

It was here in the ancient Barberton Mountainlands and Wild Frontier region of Mpumalanga, where this incredible journey of all journeys for me really started. The rocks all around me spoke of the conditions and environments that prevailed at the most remote reaches of time, at the very edge of scientific imagination. It was here that I met the fascinating and dedicated scientists who decode the secrets that have been locked up for billions of years in these rocks, sediments and mountains, and read them in the same way as we read the pages of a book.

Nkomazi Wilderness Gallery Booklet

To capture the diversity of Nkomazi Wilderness, the Cradle of Life Museum™ has compiled a gallery of images collected over the last ten years. These tell the scientific story of the Earth’s beginning as well as expressing the spectacular beauty of the landscapes, flora and fauna.

Nkomazi Wilderness History

Nkomazi is an area of outstanding landscape beauty. It is an ecological treasure trove of natural science, from its towering ancient mountains (the oldest in the world) to its broad river valleys and impressive grasslands - currently the world’s most threatened biome. It is blessed with interesting geomorphologic features such as the oldest and largest meteorite impact deposit on earth, the first continent (the Kaapvaal Craton), the oldest river and sea beds, ancient river valleys, potholes and many other natural wonders.
